GP practices will be able to order, keep in stock and administer Nexplanon®

Nexplanon® was recently added to the Statement of Financial Entitlements,  and it will be included on the list of PAI.

From the 1st of January 2025, GP practices will be able to order, keep in stock and administer Nexplanon® to their patients as needed, and subsequently claim back the cost. This means that patients do not have to go to the pharmacy to pick up the implant and then make a further GP appointment to get it fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

We hope you find the information below useful.

Nexplanon® was added to the Statement of Financial Entitlements, which was updated on the 1st of October 2024. Going forward, it will be included on the list of Personally Administered Items.

This means that General Practice will be able to order, keep in stock and administer Nexplanon® to their appropriate patients as needed, and subsequently claim back the cost.

This change comes into effect from the 1st of January 2025.

The addition of Nexplanon® to the Statement of Financial Entitlements provides an alternative route for provision. This is not a mandatory change.

A practice can now choose their preferred way of providing Nexplanon® for appropriate women. From the 1st of January 2025, practices have the option of:

  • providing it via the PAI pathway (FP34D form),
  • or can continue as before, prescribing via an FP10 prescription.

Due to this change however, pharmacies may begin to manage their stock levels differently, opting to keep lower stock levels or not holding any Nexplanon® implants at all.
Organon recommends communicating your preferred route with your local pharmacy, so they can manage stock levels effectively, ensuring uninterrupted provision of Nexplanon® to appropriate women.

You can purchase Nexplanon® at the BNF list price through wholesaler Alliance Healthcare.

Your personally administered batch is then processed by NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA), and the information is passed to your Sub ICB Location (SICBL) for payment, which is subject to amendments.

The data is dispatched no later than the 15th of the month after the month NHSBSA receive it. The actual date that each practice will be paid depends on each payment site’s local arrangements.

No, this is not necessary.

If an item is classed as personally administered on the NHS Business Services Authority’s system, they will automatically treat it as such when it is received with a doctors’ account (both dispensing and non-dispensing).
